Almost 1.3 million people in the world get into a car accident every year. Out of this number a tragic average of 3,287 deaths per day, as indicated in a recent report by the Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT).

The United States takes up 37,000 of that total. Up to 50 million are harmed or crippled as well. Although there are a wide variety of factors which play a role in each individual accident, geographical location can increase the probability for a crash.  Here are some of the most dangerous places in the world to drive in.

Dominican Republic

Nestled in the Caribbean and known for being a hotspot for tourists in search of a great vacation, it’s known for being an incredibly dangerous place to drive. The road fatality rate is quite high.  Each year, 29 out of every 100,000 people in this country die in car accidents.

From drunk driving, going over the speed limit, failing to signal lane changes, and running through stop signs are just a few of the main reasons for car accidents in this nation.

Libya

Although you may not think of Libya as being one of the worst places in the world for driving, it has a very high number of vehicle-related deaths. One of the biggest reasons for this is speeding, which is a big problem in this North African country.

Fighting and warring also play a role in the safety of the roads as a result of the political climate.

Thailand

Thailand’s fatality rate is one of the highest for a variety of reasons.  Known for being not far off of a wild west when it comes to driving, you’ll find drunk drivers, fast speeding, and road laws which are not strongly enforced.

The high number of vehicle accidents in this country make it a place where you should be extremely careful driving in should you rent a car.

Venezuela

Although there are plenty of roads in good condition in Venezuela, there are a lot which remain unpaved and made of gravel and dirt.  As a result, a large number of roads are full of dangerous potholes and landslides which pose as a serious danger to inhabitants and visitors.

It’s also important to know that pedestrians don’t have the right of way in this country.  Therefore, you can forget about jaywalking in this country unless you want to risk your life.

Iraq

Iraq is in the top 10 most dangerous countries to drive in.

Because of the security situation, any form of travel in Iraq is incredibly dangerous.  Drivers are known for being rude, impatient and particularly aggressive.
