Traveling is a great time to unwind and get away, but if you get sick while you are on vacation your whole trip can get ruined. Plus you don’t want to end up in the hospital in another country just because you didn’t take some precautions to have a healthy and happy trip.

It doesn’t matter what type of vacation you are taking, or how you are getting there, you need to make sure that you have a safe trip to your destination and get back home in one piece.

Get Your Immunizations

Before you travel abroad, if that is your destination, you definitely want to make sure that you have gotten all your immunizations updated if you are in need. Different country habor different diseases, even ones that are no longer common in the United States. That’s why it is important to protect yourself.

More than just your immunizations, you want to make sure that you have all of your own prescription, and over the counter, medications with you. You may not be able to find your right medications abroad, or they may not be what you think they are.

Give Your Immunity A Boost

Not only can it help to have your immunizations before you go, but it is also wise to do what you can to boost your immune system before you leave. You can do this by taking more vitamins and antioxidants. There are plenty of immune boosting vitamins available on shelves at the store.

Even before you get to your destination you open yourself up to more illnesses. Even a ride on the plane can open you up to many airborne diseases.

Protect Yourself From Motion Sickness

Even if you’ve never experienced motion sickness before, you may want to be prepared for it, especially if you will be traveling in a different means than you have in the past. Just because a car doesn’t cause you sickness doesn’t mean a plane or boat won’t. And, just because you haven’t had motion sickness on a fishing trip doesn’t mean you won’t on a week long cruise ship.

Aside from taking some motion sickness medication with you, it also helps not to eat or drink too much while you are moving and to not read while you are in a moving vehicle.

Watch What You Eat/Drink

Just like you don’t want to eat or drink too much while you are in the motions of traveling, you also want to be careful how much and what you eat or drink even when you are standing still. Like they say, don’t drink the water in Mexico.

Vacations should be enjoyable, so to avoid cutting it short or spending time in the hospital upon your return, make sure to do everything you can to be safe!
