Taking a holiday, whether it’s a few weeks or a few days, is an endeavour that everyone should do if they can. A holiday is the chance to get away from the normal way of life and try new things or simply relax and enjoy yourself either alone, with a partner or friends, or with your whole family. If you’re looking for a different kind of UK holiday this year, here are some great ideas for you.

Use the Railways

The UK is famous for its innovations in railways in times gone by when steam trains were everyday sights to be seen. These days trains are often taken for granted – they’re just a way to commute to work, aren’t they? However, if you start to search for train-based holidays, you’ll find that there are many opportunities to get away from it all by riding the rails.

The key is to choose a sleeper train so that you can explore new places each day and then move onto the next place during the night. You can do this across Scotland and Wales, or even up through England and into Scotland.

Try a Canal Boat

If you’ve ever wanted to try travelling on a canal boat, but you’ve been worried about a lack of experience, then really there is no cause for concern; you can hire a boat complete with a captain who will do all the hard work for you. All you need to do is explore the sites and take in the scenery. Alternatively, you can hire a boat for you to be in charge of and you will be given instructions on how to drive it when you first set off. If you’re confident in your navigation skills, this option gives you ultimate freedom.

Camping

Do you want to keep yourself busy whilst you’re on holiday? If that’s the case, a working holiday might be best for you. You can try your hand at camping, a very popular pastime in the UK, or even wild camping, where you will be tasked with clearing canal banks and weeding gardens in important historic homes. You’ll have the satisfaction of helping a charity and learning new skills as well as meeting new people.

If that doesn’t sound appealing, then you could just go camping instead. Hire or buy the equipment you need and pick a great campsite – there are over 3,000 in the UK – where you can get away from the strains of ‘real life’ and enjoy some peace and solitude. Camping offers a back to basics kind of holiday which is often exactly what is needed.

Stay in an Oxford College

The colleges in Oxford often rent out their students’ rooms during the holidays on a bed and breakfast basis making them the ideal spot to stay in to explore this most gorgeous of English cities. There is so much history in Oxford and so many things to see that you’ll be glad of comfortable lodgings when you’re done for the day.
