Travelling is something that everyone has to do at some stage. While each journey may be unique, there are some aspects of travelling that are the same no matter who you are or where you’re going – and the risk of boredom is one of them. When you’re faced with a long motorway journey or a seemingly endless train ride, it can become easy to dread travel. However, by choosing one – or more – of the ideas outlined here, you can ensure that your travel experience is as interesting and exciting as possible.

Read a book

There’s a big debate going on around the subject of reading while travelling, and it’s likely that everyone falls into one camp or the other. Some people find it an amazing way to pass the time – after all, there’s nothing quite like a good book to get you distracted – but others consider reading while travelling to be a no-go, especially as it’s a known cause of travel sickness. If it’s something that you think you can manage, then a trip to the library before you begin your journey is a smart move.

Play a game

Anyone who has ever travelled a distance of more than an hour will be familiar with the best car journey games, such as I Spy. However, if the thought of traditional car journey games fills you with dread, then don’t worry – by taking along a device such as a tablet or a mobile phone, you can play a game that’s a little more technological in nature. Why not opt for an enthralling brain teaser app, or a crossword generator? Or, if you are feeling lucky, try online gaming on your favourite casino website. You never know, you could win some spending money for the trip ahead!

Enjoy some multimedia

If you want to be entertained but don’t fancy reading a book on your car journey, then it’s a good idea to charge up your portable devices and get stuck into some fun movies and television programmes. Whether it’s a new blockbuster film that you want to watch or a few episodes of your favourite TV programme, downloading it all when you have Wi-Fi through a legitimate streaming site such as Netflix is a great idea. If you don’t, then you could get hit by data roaming charges if you find yourself needing to download over a mobile internet connection – so it pays to be prepared.

If you find yourself resenting travelling due to the boredom that it can create, then don’t worry – it’s something that most people have experienced from time to time. There are plenty of ways that you can mitigate the boredom that travel creates: if you’re a regular reader, for example, then you can pick up a book to take with you on your travels, while if you prefer multimedia, then there’s likely to be a downloadable show that’s perfect for you on a site such as Netflix. Just remember to prepare by visiting the library or downloading what you need – or you may get caught short.
