Moving can be one of life’s most stressful processes.  And it’s no wonder!  Moving takes time, there are so many details to take care of, it costs money, things can go wrong, and it’s just plain no fun. That’s a recipe for a stressful situation if there ever was one!  Luckily, by hiring a professional moving company you can help alleviate a lot of that stress off of your shoulders.  However, how do you know which company to hire?  Follow these steps to ensure you are doing everything you can to ensure you are hiring the best company for the job.

Do some research

Before you call a moving company, it’s important to get a clear picture of exactly what it is you have to move.  Don’t move things you don’t need!  The first step in hiring a mover is actually to purge what you own so you don’t have to move extra things.  It’s always better to throw things out before you pack rather than packing things you don’t need, only to either store them again in your new home or throw them out when you unpack.  Always remember that the quote you receive from the moving company will be based on how much you have to move, so the more you have to move, the more money it will cost you.  By purging and downsizing before you pack, you’ll save money on the move.

Call early

It’s important call a moving company such as kingstransfer.com as early as possible.  Movers book up well in advance, so if you want to ensure you get the movers you want on the date you require them, book them as soon as you know the date you are going to move.  As an added bonus you’ll probably get a better rate by booking early, too.  Once you know how much you have to move, where you are moving and when, book your moving company.

Ask questions – lots of them!

Before you hire a mover, always interview at least three different companies to find the one that is the best fit for you.  Ask things like:  Do you offer long-distance moving services?  How long have you been in business?  What are your rates?  What do those rates include?  Are you insured?  Can I get some references?  Do you charge more for “difficult” situations such as narrow hallways or stairs?  Also, ask to speak to the actual person who will be moving your stuff.  It’s important to get a good feeling from him.  If you don’t, don’t hire them.  Remember, they will be handling your precious belongings, so if your gut is telling you that something isn’t right, you should listen.

Get everything in writing

Once you have gotten an estimate from a few companies, choose one and get everything in writing.  This is an important safeguard.  Not only will you have the final price in writing (to avoid any sticker shock when you get the final invoice!) you will also have a written record of their guarantees, etc.  Should something go wrong (loss or damage of your belongings, for example) you will have recourse to take action.
