You probably didn’t know that Alabama’s nickname is the Yellowhammer State, and there are plenty of other things worth exploring in the state.  Alabama is rich with history, and contrary to popular belief, it’s not all bad.

From retracing the trail of unforgettable civil rights activists, to space camp, and exploring the various beaches and parks of the state, you’ll be hard pressed to find yourself bored.  Take a few moments to let your mind soak in some of the coolest things about Alabama.

Here is a brief overview of a few of the best places to experience while in the Yellowhammer State.

Dig into the history of Selma

Some of the most significant events in the historic fight for civil rights took place in the state of Alabama, and particularly the town of Selma.  Though pop culture turned the historic walk in Selma into a theatrical event, the real beauty was in the will of the people.

You can sign up to take a guided walk to the area while you visit, and talk with a woman who was there to experience the great show of unity firsthand.  There are also many beautiful displays of old architecture to enjoy as you explore the town of Selma.

Check out the Huntsville Space Center

Huntsville is Alabama’s great “Rocket City,” and the name is entirely fitting.  Huntsville is home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, which means it is also the home to Space Camp.

You may think that Space Camp is just for kids, but that is not true.  You can spend the whole day dressing up in real space gear and going through various simulations.  Go ahead, get excited.

Step into another world at the Birmingham Zoo

The Birmingham Zoo has been opened to the public or more than 50 years.  Hop in the car, and take a short drive down Alabama Hwy 280 to another world.  It’s a large zoo, with 122 acres of land which serves as home to more than 800 animals and 200 various species.  If you’re looking to explore a zoo interested in preserving the beauty of life, the Birmingham Zoo will serve you well.

Thrift your heart out at Unclaimed Baggage

If you enjoy shopping through secondhand items, the thrifty happiness of Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsdale, Alabama will make your heart smile.  You may have wondered what happens to all of the unclaimed baggage at the airport. This store is what happens to all those valuable items.

Dig through a plethora of items, and find a few hidden treasures in the isles of the Unclaimed Baggage store.  You won’t be sorry you stopped.

Orange Beach on the Gulf Coast

Your first thought when thinking of Alabama is likely not one of the beach, but the coast of Alabama has some of the most beautiful beaches around.  The Gulf of Mexico gives way to the white sands of Orange Beach, and the emerald waters pose in stark contrast.
